Portfolio
I have realized a curious thing about portfolios this year: everyone wants them done a little differently. Colleges want specific types of portfolios (2D, 3D video etc) some want a specific vision exclusively represented and others want the range of mediums displayed. Then there is the AP art portfolio assessment program that has completely different criteria. It is all quite complicated sometimes feels restricting for evaluating subjective and creative works if you ask me. But no one is really asking me.
So this is my portfolio, not my AP portfolio or my college submission portfolio. But a master portfolio of my recent work that I feel represents my creative projects. It includes 3d and 2d.. classical mediums and digital renderings, stop motion.. photography.. cinematography. It is all here. The best I can do is sort it all in general ways (although I really am not sure where to categorize a relief print made with 3d rendered and printed CMYK blocks)
This is a work in progress.. WORK IN PROGRESS

Illustration / Drawing / Printmaking / 2D Stuff
Just some insight: my heart is in illustration. I love telling stories - and my favorite way to do it is with pictures. I am also including printmaking and similar 2D stuff. in this section.

Bolex
2015
still life observational drawing
graphite pencils on 11X17 bristol board
I adore equipment and mechanisms from past eras. One of my many passions is collecting vintage film cameras and projectors. The pride and joy of my collection would be my beautiful Pollard Bolex 16mm camera. To me the precision, mechanical and aesthetic achievement represents an old beauty that combines form and functionality in a totally analog system of synchronized beauty. This rendering is my attempt to convey its intrinsic form and beauty.

An exercise in observational drawing of interior spaces. I had various lighting I wanted to relate. This simple houseplant was a peaceful yet interesting subject to draw.

2014
ink drawing on bristol 11X17
This effort was to demonstrate the way one can creatively tell a story through the interaction of an object and it’s shadow. My approach was to contrast the style and interaction of the hands and shadow to convey a storyteller in the act. I wanted to highlight the viewer’s experience while witnessing the story being told and being influenced by the act of the storytelling using a combination of styles within the ink medium to contrast the real from shadow.

This was a freeform ink observational illustration done at the Sitka Fine Arts camp. It was more stylistic than I normally work and I was quite pleased with certain facets of the balance and contrast.

still life illustration
Charcoal and pastels on 23 X 20 paper
This was an effort in observational drawing with stylistic and thoughtful modifications. Getting out of my general comfort zone and rendering not just what I see but what I would like to see.

Acrylics on 11 x 17 canvas
An abstract effort to represent some multiplicity in identity and how it often results in a disconnect in interaction and the way one presents and understands oneself.

illustration
Ink and watercolor on 17X20 water color paper
Bill Watterson is one of my all time favorite illustrators. This ink and watercolor illustration is absolutely an homage to Watterson. I have always loved the way Watterson can tell such wonderful stories with the minimal amount of line and effort. Splashing colors and utilizing dense and light areas of ink.. he is able to make a world between reality and fantasy where the mundane is magical. A simple illustration of a boy fishing felt appropriate.

Red Van

Red Van
11/2014
Copper plate etching
Plate 9” x 9”
Paper 15”X15”
hard ground intaglio
hand pulled on arches antiqued white paper.
The Red Van has sat in the woods next to my childhood home as long as I can remember. It is a retired 1952 Ford radio station panel van. Over the years, it’s red paint has faded and chipped, moss grew over it’s extremities as nature slowly took root. I love this van, and it represents the quiet nobility found in abandoned objects lost in the woods. This etching attempts to catch the essence of the red van and all it means to me,
Intaglio Printmaking was the perfect medium use, as it’s innately ancient nature reflects exactly the message I was hoping to get across. The completely analog process was very interesting to go through: touching and manipulating the copper, using mordants and tools to make marks, rendering the image in such a substantive way, then ultimately rolling it through the press taking the first proofs. I then got too manipulate the image even more in ways that would have been impossible to do in the pen and ink medium I was more accustomed to.

Self Portrait CMYK
2014
Relief Print
4 blocks 5X6”
oil based ink printed on 11X13 arches paper
I was inspired to attempt to create relief printing blocks with my 3d printer. My initial experiments were on much smaller scales and with single color. I ultimately refined the process to provide both adequate detail and proper 3D printing and fill settings. This produced a printing plate that would provide the detail I wanted while also being able to withstand the printing process.
I then color separated a photo I took of myself, rendered each separation in my 3d printing and slicing software, then printed it using my 3D printer. I finally inked up each plate in CMYK and printed it on a smooth vellum paper. The result was a lovely balance of my vision, and the randomness of the 3d printed matrix as a vehicle for the inks. I am not certain, but it MIGHT be the first case of 3d printed relief blocks.

ink illustration
ink on 10X13 bristol board
An illustration telling a story, both the interior and exterior. The mundane and fantastic. As much as this could be taken literally, my intent was to represent the way my thoughts and imaginings take hold and even though I could be in the most mundane setting.. my mind can be far away.

Robot Triptych
2014
mixed media illustration
digital photo and ink drawing photo
This piece is ink drawn, digitally processed and colored, with photographs taken in my hometown of Palmer Alaska. I wanted to do a photographic / illustrative integration, and I thought doing a small series would be a good approach. The town of Palmer couldn’t be quieter. It is a small old town in Alaska that I have spent many an afternoon exploring. The idea of robots working in and amongst my sleepy town was the initial inspiration.

The form and shape of Telephone Poles have always held a certain fascination in my mind. They are one of the many pillars that hold up modern civilization, creating direct lines of communication between individuals miles apart. This piece intends to reflect on the story behind the telephone pole, portraying the way that an individual feels when separated from the masses. Something that is so normal it is almost invisible all of the sudden becomes unique. It makes me want to draw telephone poles in all sorts of wrong places, living rooms, beaches, middle of the street.

Ink on bristol - digitally colored in photoshop
I wanted to do an homage to another inspiration of mine, Jack (the king) Kirby. I love classic silver age comic books and their unapologetic use of color. The fantastic is the goal. I wish space actually looked the way Kirby and his followers rendered it. But that’s okay - we have comic books and wonderful imaginations to see his skies.

Junk
2014
Multimedia
Ink, paper, and watercolor on 40X26 paper
I started by drawing the rhythm of some classic Chinese music on newsprint. I then cut the newsprint up to form the sails for what ultimately became an ink and water color of a Chinese Junk.

Letterpress print
oil based ink on 4X6 Cardstock
I fabricated the relief block for the wheel on my 3d printer, one of my first attempts at 3d printed letterpress blocks. I then set metal type. The studio I work in has a habit of putting casters on everything.. which inspired this simple studio print.

Palmer Public Library Reading program Mural
2013
Mural / Poster
Ink and watercolor on 4’X6” paper
The theme for the summer reading program was “Under The Surface” and I took the theme and illustrated it using a classic mystery science comic book cover style. My goal was to make the reading program mural fun and engaging, ultimately to get the kids excited about attending.
This was a hand drawn, inked and colored mural for the library reading program. Although I have helped and collaborated on the library murals for 7 years, 2013 was the first mural I completed all on my own.

3D / Rendering / Sculpture and Fused Fillament Printing

Robot Sculpture
2014
3d modeled/rendered and printed
ABS filament, figure measures approx. 6” tall
The inspiration on this project was to model and print a robot figure inspired by the characters in my fathers 2013 Intaglio print series entitled “Clockworks”
In the images I have posted here you can see the process from rendering the robot, to printing out the physical sculpture.
Most of my rendering and printing has a purpose or is a job. This is one that I did from scratch purely for sculptural reasons.

Sign Prototyping
2014
3D rendered and printed
ABS filament
I have been employed to render and prototype signs for a local business in my area through my Hourglass Fabrication business.
I start with the blueprints for the sign, and then create a 3D rendering based on the dimensions. The process takes precision and technique.
It is pretty sweet to drive down the road and see a sign I helped to prototype.

Cinematography / Animation / Time Lapse etc.
The following videos were completely done by me. Including planning, camera work, editing etc.
- Antiquated Press Process Video, Saturday Craze, Procrescro and Palmer Hyperlapse
These include my Sitka Fine arts animations from 2014. As well as my personal and school video projects. The antiquated press film was featured in an article on printeresting.org
The other two videos: namely the Aliens and Apple Distinguished Award, are school projects in which I played a major part, but were not completely my own endeavors. They were collaborations where I worked on a team in all facets including editing, camera work, planning etc.

Anchorage Museum Exhibit: Dena’ina Way of Living
During the Summer of 2013 I worked as an Intern for the Anchorage Museum. I worked directly under the diorama creator building recreations of a beluga hunting scene and a river fish camp.
During the internship I worked with large foam, resin, museum artifacts, appropriate plant reproductions and other unique materials. It was an incredible work and creative experience. The exhibit opened to great crowds and the Dioramas I worked on were spotlighted extensively.
After the exhibit closed, the beluga hunting scene was placed on exhibit in the Ted Stevens International airport.
